Abstract

Older adults experience various physical, psychological, and social changes associated with the aging process, which may reduce their ability to perform daily activities and subsequently affect their quality of life. Independence in Activities of Daily Living (ADL) is an important indicator of functional ability, particularly among older adults living in residential care facilities. This study aimed to examine the relationship between independence in daily activities and quality of life among older adults at PSTW Budi Mulia 1. This research employed a quantitative analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The instruments used were the Barthel Index to assess independence in ADL and the Short Form-36 (SF-36) Health Survey to measure quality of life across eight domains. The sample consisted of 61 older adults who met the predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria at PSTW Budi Mulia 1. Data were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation test. The results showed a strong, positive, and significant relationship between independence in daily activities and quality of life among older adults at PSTW Budi Mulia 1, with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.639 and a significance value of p = 0.000. Higher levels of independence in performing daily activities were associated with better quality of life among older adults. These findings may serve as a basis for developing occupational therapy interventions aimed at improving functional ability, participation, and well-being among older adults in residential care settings.
